The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, commonly abbreviated as EFCC, is a federal law enforcement agency tasked with investigating economic crimes in Nigeria, including money laundering and advanced fee fraud (known as 419 fraud)The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was established in April 2003 as a result of pressure placed on Nigeria by the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering (FATF).The international body had earlier singled out Nigeria as one of 23 countries that remained uncooperative in combating money laundering and supporting the efforts of the international community to stop financial fraud.With the adoption of the EFCC Act in 2004, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is making every effort to put a complete stop to actions that are contrary to the Criminal Code and the Penal Code.On that basis, they have led many investigations into economic crime and convicted many others. The organization is headquartered in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and is currently headed by Vice President Ibrahim Magu.

What are the functions of EFCC?:
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is vested with certain responsibilities as set out in the EFCC ACT of 2004. On that note, the statutory functions of the EFCC include;
- To function as the national coordinator for anti-money laundering activities.
- To investigate and prosecute financial crimes as stated in Section 47 of the 2004 EFCC ACT to put an end to crimes such as tax evasion, capital market fraud, bank frauds, futures market, etc.
- To give financial security to the Nigerian economy through dealing with the dangers of illegal bunkering, official corruption, bank fraud, advance fee fraud, tax evasion and other economic crimes that can stagnant the economy growth.
- To function as the selected Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).
- To carry out the provisions of all financial institution decree, failed bank decrees, money laundering act, banks decree, and advanced fee fraud acts.
- To prosecute financial crimes defaulters immediately without passing through the Attorney General’s Office.
- To ensure efficient judicial proceedings that is within the mandate of the commission.
- To recommend relevant policies as regards financial crimes in the country.
- To liaise and collaborate with IFCC, ICPC, and other national societies.
- To coordinate all existing economic and financial crimes investigating units in Nigeria.
- To collaborate with government bodies within and outside Nigeria to carry out the functions of the commission.
- To facilitate the rapid exchange of technical and scientific information to eradicate economic and financial crimes in the country.
- To conduct joint operations that are geared towards eradication of financial and economic crimes in the country.
