Princeton Neuroscience Institute (PNI) 2023 Summer Internship Program

The Princeton Neuroscience Institute will be hosting a 2023 summer internship program. PNI’s program is for highly motivated visiting undergraduates who are interested in pursuing a graduate degree in neuroscience or a related field. PNI provides education and hands-on research experience and participants collaborate closely with students and faculty at PNI on original research projects and gain invaluable first-hand experience on what it is like to be a neuroscientist.

Summer interns participate in group educational activities, including:

  • Weekly foundational overview lectures from PNI faculty
  • Summer courses in Python and Matlab
  • Lab meetings with the researchers with whom they will work
  • Journal club reading groups
  • Special forums on topics such as career advice and graduate school application preparation
  • End-of-summer poster session
  • Attend Leadership Alliance National Symposium
  • Attend Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting

The Summer Internship Program offers:

  • Competitive stipend
  • Travel costs to and from Princeton
  • Housing on campus
  • Meal plan
  • Travel costs to attend the Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting
PNI welcomes and encourages applications from all undergraduate students including those who identify themselves as belonging to groups that have been historically underrepresented among researchers in the sciences. For the official federal designations of these groups, please see the Frequently Asked Questions.)

Program Details

Each student is placed in a world-class research laboratory – headed by a faculty member – and carries out an original research project.  Students are thoughtfully matched to labs based on their research interests as indicated in their application form, recommendation letters, and personal statement. Careful consideration is taken of each applicant’s overall experience, academic background, and objectives. Lab assignments are emailed to program participants in mid-February.

Who Should Apply

Non-Princeton Undergraduates
  • Current undergraduates who have a strong passion for scientific research and are seriously considering graduate studies in neuroscience.
  • Future researchers whose participation will add to the diversity of researchers in the sciences, or who are from institutions that do not have large research programs.
  • Visiting student applicants must be current undergraduates who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Princeton Undergraduates

Princeton Students should create an application in SAFE and search for funding opportunities there.  Princeton students are encouraged to participate in the PNI Summer Internship program activities.

  • Undergraduates can apply directly through the application portal.
  • Princeton University is a member of the Leadership Alliance and encourages applicants to apply to the Program through the Leadership Alliance-SR-EIP portal and select Princeton as one of their three site choices. The Leadership Alliance is a consortium of academic institutions that encourage diversity and work to prepare young scholars from underrepresented and underserved populations for graduate training and are not exclusionary on the basis of race, color, sex, age, religion, national and ethnic origin, disability, veteran status, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. The Leadership Alliance application portal will be open November 1, 2022.
  • Applicants are encouraged to do both applications as becoming a member of the Leadership Alliance network provides additional benefits (beyond what PNI will offer,) including a summer trip to present your research at the Leadership Alliance National Symposium.
  • Princeton’s application requests additional information beyond what is included in the Leadership Alliance’s application (for example, lab placement requests. However, you need only submit the Application and PNI-SIP Questionnaire in our system and do not need to resubmit transcripts, personal statement, and letters of recommendation. We will receive that information from the Leadership Alliance.
