Interested applicants are invited to apply for Delaware Department of State 2023 Internship Program. The internship program in the Office of the Secretary of State is an exciting opportunity for college students and recent graduates to gain experience in a professional setting, learn more about the policy making process, and experience state politics at work.

Through the completion of the internship program, interns can gain practical skills that will prepare them for future endeavors in public service.

The internship program is a part-time, paid program open to college students and recent graduates with a record of academic excellence and a strong interest in public service. At this time, positions are only available in the Dover office (in-person) for the spring, summer, and fall terms.

The Internship

Interns are fully integrated into office operations, including policy, communications, and administrative work. Interns will:

  • Work closely with the policy staff to track Department of State legislation, perform research, draft briefing memos, and attend hearings at Legislative Hall. Note: when the Legislature is out-of-session (between July 1st and December 31st, summer and fall interns will assist in other policy work, including tracking and attending bill signings).
  • Work with the communications team to monitor news outlets, assist with press releases, and develop content for Department of State social media platforms and website.
  • Provide general administrative support to our scheduling team including archiving documents, greeting constituents and answering constituent inquiries, and assist in event planning.

Work schedules are flexible, but interns should plan to schedule between 12-20 hours per week for this internship.

Intern Requirements

  • Currently enrolled college student (Bachelor’s, Post-graduate) in a relatable field of study, or recent graduate
  • Minimum of 2.5 GPA
  • Reliable transportation
  • Excellent written and communications skills
  • Interest in policy, communications, and/or administrative work
  • Self-motivated, hard-working, and well-organized
  • A passion for public service

Application Priority Deadlines

  • Spring term (January through May): Deadline extended to December 9, 2022
  • Summer term (June through August): April 14th, 2023
  • Fall term (September through December): July 14th, 2023
