Job Title: Junior Associate, Enhancing Access to Safe and Nutritious Diets (ENSAND)

Location: Kebbi, Nigeria

Job Summary

  • We are seeking a Junior Associate, Enhancing Access to Safe and Nutritious Diets (ENSAND) to support the implementation of ENSAND project activities. This position will be based in Kebbi, Nigeria.

Overall Purpose

  • The Enhancing Access to Safe and Nutritious Diets (ENSAND) project seeks to build on the lessons and progress from GAIN’s recent investments that includes creating demand for eggs (The ‘Eggs make Kids’ campaign), scaling up support for safe, nutritious food supply to traditional market (KFMW, EatSafe, SBN) through SMEs, Commercialization of Biofortified Crops (CBC) and reducing postharvest loss (PLAN). The overarching objective is to increase access to and consumption of nutritious foods at the household levels. The specific goal of ENSAND project is to improve dietary diversity of low-income (BoP) households in 3 states of Nigeria (Kaduna, Kebbi and FCT) with emphasis on children of school age and women.
  • GAIN is seeking for a Junior Associates in Kebbi State for this exciting opportunity. The Junior Associates will support the implementation of specific project activities in their assigned State’s based on approved workplans. In addition, s/he will support project reporting and provide administrative cover necessary to ensure timely implementation and achievement of key project outputs. This position will report directly to the Project Manager, ENSAND.

Tasks and Responsibilities
Programmatic support:

  • Support the implementation of ENSAND project, working with implementing agencies, market organizations and businesses
  • Support routine visits to the field to ensure that project implementation process is on track
  • In coordination with ENSAND project team members, participate at project review meetings with government, project partners, community stakeholders and other technical groups as the need arises
  • Under the direction of the Project Manager, support the implementation of project components with other project leads to ensure activities are executed within agreed timeline. Support the creation and delivery of project reports including data analysis from project implementation
  • Perform any other relevant tasks as assigned by the Project Manager

Administrative support:

  • Support the establishment and maintenance of a range of basic databases and filing system for the Enhancing Access to Safe and nutritious Diets (ENSAND)
  • Support with the ENSAND team with travel logistics arrangements
  • Support minutes taking for meetings, seminars, technical sessions, and conferences
  • Work closely with GAIN Nigeria operations team in raising of Purchase Orders and processing related to payments for procurement of goods and services
  • Develop and manage attendance and payment sheets for meetings or gatherings pertaining to the EASND project.

Job Requirements

Education:

  • University Level Degree in a relevant field such as, Nutrition Science, Public Health, Business Administration, Food Technology, Sociology Development Studies or Agricultural Science with at least three years of progressive experience in the same/similar role
  • A Master’s Degree in any of the above fields with two years’ experience will be an added advantage

Competencies:

  • Demonstrable experience and skill in project management
  • Experience in partnership/stakeholder management
  • Negotiation skills required to support the management of contractors and vendors contracted to deliver high-quality results
  • Highly organized and detailed-oriented
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all staff

Experience:

  • Demonstrated professional experience directly, or indirectly, related to product development, food systems, and international development, including the implementation of market-based agricultural or nutrition programs
  • Proven experience with admin and procurement functions
  • Experience working on Poultry value chains project/working with PAN Nigeria
  • Excellent writing skill is required

Other Requirements

  • Experience in stimulating demand for food and agricultural commodities through social or commercial marketing methods
  • Fluent written and verbal English
  • Hausa mandatory
  • Must be conversant with Kebbi and FCT terrain.

Salary
NGN 4,545,454 – NGN 5,183,413 per annum, depending on experience.

  • In addition, s/he will also support the management of consultants who will be recruited to deliver specialized elements of the project output/deliverable. This position will report directly to the Senior Project Manager and programme lead for ENSAND.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Directly responsible for delivery of Abuja component of ENSAND project activities
  • Support the recruitment and management of the project consultants and track the delivery of contractual outputs in a timely manner
  • Support the implementation of the ENSAND project by fostering strong collaboration with implementing agencies, market organizations and businesses
  • Support project partner’s capacity building plans by tracking processes and timely closure of all technical organizational development gaps identified and prioritized
  • Responsible for tracking and providing updates on ENSAND project workplans using innovative medium that helps the team to keep abreast of project deliverables
  • Support project reporting through timely and diligent tracking of key project indicators
  • Visits the field as the need arises to ensure that project progress is on track
  • Support the implementation of risk mitigation plans as required

  • Extensive programme implementation, monitoring and reporting responsibilities among multiple stakeholders including government agencies
  • Experience working with government institutions especially at the federal, state and LGA level
  • Experience working with civil society organizations, private and public food systems like the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), women led small holder farms, market associations etc.
  • Professional experience related to product development, market-based agricultural or nutrition programs and demand creation activities
  • Strong project management experience
  • Experience working on Poultry value chains project/ working with PAN Nigeria
  • Organization assessment and partners’ s capacity building/training experience is required
  • Partner’s management experience is required

Job Title: Manager, Data Analytics and Visualization

Location: Abuja
Contract Type: Fixed Term

Overall Purpose

  • The Manager, Data Analytics and Visualization (DAV) will lead analysis of existing data sets (e.g., household income and expenditure surveys, similar national or multi-country quantitative data).
  • Acting as the lead focal point, they will be responsible for providing expert advice as well as technical and analytical support for research and evaluations managed/ commissioned by GAIN and will lead on the proposed approaches to and development of data visualizations for use by countries, program leads and senior management.
  • This position will report to the Director, Knowledge Leadership (KL) but will engage intensively with GAIN senior management and country teams to support data needs for strategy and proposal development, with all KL Senior Technical Specialists in support of research and evaluation, and members of the Program Services Team (e.g., Technical Officer, Reaching the very poorest).

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Oversee and identify appropriate analytical methods for research studies conducted / commissioned by GAIN and when needed analyse data
  • Develop, manage, and ensure critically review analysis plans and reports from research partners and develop reports/publications that consolidate evidence from single to several programs for diverse technical audiences.
  • Manage and quality assure quantitative analytical work undertaken or funded by GAIN as required
  • Identify and analyse data publicly available data sets that can be used to generate insights relevant for food systems and nutrition for strategy documents, donor proposals, reports, presentations (for expert and non-expert audiences)
  • Lead a body of work that will improve GAIN’s capacity to measure food affordability
  • Oversee and support others to ensure timely and appropriate project management of such projects within GAIN’s project management methods and systems
  • Provide high level leadership to team members, including mentorship to early career staff and students as direct reports and through participation in learning activities led by the KL team.
  • Identify opportunities and lead efforts to fundraise for GAINs analytical work
  • Any other related activities as guided by Director, Knowledge Leadership.

Requirements
Education:

  • PhD in Statistics, Epidemiology, or related field with extensive focus and coursework on complex statistical analyses or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Substantial experience creating R packages, and using R Shiny, GitHub, Python, Computable General Equilibrium modelling (or similar)
  • Demonstrated experience in critical analysis skills to support with evidence generation and reporting
  • Track record of publication(s) in high impact peer reviewed journals commensurate with demonstrable experience
  • Advanced skills in multivariate analysis of complex data sets using R, Stata, SAS, or SPSS
  • Hands on experience doing research in low- or middle-income country, in collaboration with local research counterparts
  • Proposal writing and fundraising experience highly desirable
  • Expertise in data management and analysis tools and software an asset.

Competencies:

  • Deep knowledge and experience analysing multi-country data sets including national/ regional food price data, household economic surveys (e.g., household budget surveys, household income and expenditure surveys, household consumption and expenditure surveys, or living standards measurement studies).
  • Skilled at creation of high quality and innovative data visualizations (for communication of findings to expert and non-expert audiences)
  • Ability to use qualitative research approaches and how findings complement quantitative results
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills (for expert audiences)
  • Excellent communication and facilitation between programme teams with varying levels of technical knowledge
  • Proven leadership skills and mentoring experience.

Other Requirements:

  • Fluency in spoken and written English required; fluency in a second language (such as French or Portuguese) will be an asset.

  • Salary: N10,645,932 – N12,172,47 annually.
