Firearms are the leading cause of death in children and adolescents. Suicide is the second leading cause, with the rates of deaths by suicide rising among younger children and particularly Black girls. Drug use now ranks third.
Child anxiety and depression are soaring, while test scores have plummeted. Record numbers of teachers are quitting. Student absenteeism is reaching new highs. And there were 40 school shootings in the first 10 months of 2022.
Child poverty rates, which had been declining before the pandemic, fell as a result of the federal child tax credit. But economists now fear they will rise again with the end of pandemic-era support. And inflation is causing food insecurity for some families.
The state of America’s children will be a must-cover topic for every U.S. news organization. To help journalists cover the nuances and complexities of public policies that affect children and the changes in child well-being, the National Press Foundation will offer three separate fellowships in 2023.
These programs are designed for U.S.-based national, state and local journalists interested in covering health, education and economics, gender and equity issues, nutrition, immigration, gun violence and other public policies that affect children and their families.
The fellowships will take a solutions journalism approach, examining what three different communities around the country are doing to improve the well-being of children.

McAllen Fellowship
The first program will be held in McAllen, Texas, located 11 miles from the Mexican border and 274 miles from Uvalde, where the effects of the May 24 school shooting continue to reverberate. McAllen provided the backdrop for much coverage of border issues during the Donald Trump presidency, including child separations. This fellowship will explore McAllen as one of the nation’s epicenters of child poverty: 16% of all U.S. children lived in poverty in 2020, but in the Hildago County region, where McAllen is located, it was 42%.
Leading economists, policymakers, experts and advocates will cover topics including:
- The impact of COVID-19 on education and child development
- Effects of immigration policy on children
- Child mental health
- Gun violence and juvenile justice
- Effectiveness (or lack thereof) of local anti-poverty programs.
