Award Description
The School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham is excited to announce the availability of six scholarships for the MSc Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning program, generously funded by DeepMind. These scholarships are open to national and international computer science academics who currently hold a conditional or unconditional offer for the program.
The University of Birmingham, in collaboration with DeepMind, is dedicated to enhancing diversity and accessibility in computer science, particularly for underrepresented groups. The MSc Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning program offers an excellent opportunity for students passionate about AI to pursue a rewarding career. As AI systems play an increasingly significant role in our lives, ensuring diversity in expertise is crucial for creating fair solutions that benefit our entire society.
These scholarships enable talented students to take a step closer to their ambitions in the most innovative and sought-after areas of industry and research.

Value of Award
We are offering six scholarships in total, three for UK students and three for international students.
The three UK scholarships are valued at £34,225 each and cover the following:
- UK tuition fees – £10,980
- A maintenance grant of £19,345 (to be used for living costs), paid in installments over the course duration
- Funding of up to £2,200 to attend an international conference in the field of AI and/or Machine Learning during the course, as well as £1,700 towards the purchase of essential equipment (such as a suitable laptop)
The three international scholarships are valued at £52,565 and include the following:
- International tuition fees – £27,540
- A maintenance grant of £19,345 (to be used for living costs), paid in installments over the course duration
- Funding of up to £2,200 to attend an international conference in the field of AI and/or Machine Learning during the course, as well as £1,700 towards the purchase of essential equipment (such as a suitable laptop)
- £1,870 to assist with relocation expenses
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must meet one or both of the following criteria:
- Identify as female
- Identify as Black African, Black Caribbean, or of other Black ethnicity
Additionally, applicants must:
- Be able to demonstrate, if required, that they would not be able to accept the admission offer without financial assistance
- Have received a conditional or unconditional offer to study the MSc Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning program at the University of Birmingham
- Be ordinarily resident in the UK and classified as UK for fee-paying purposes, or be classified as an international student for fee-paying purposes
Applications will be reviewed by a selection panel at the School
Applications will be shortlisted and suitable candidates contacted for interview by the end of July 2023. Further information will be shared directly with offer holders regarding the process.
