In 2024, the Maynard 200 Fellowship will focus on professional development training and a one-year mentorship for frontline editors and managers.
Her customized curriculum addresses many of the critical issues, challenges, and tensions that editors grapple with every day, especially those who have recently transitioned into senior leadership roles. They have learned from news managers that there is an acute need for fundamental editing and management skills in their teams, and their tactical courses build these skills.
Led by top journalism faculty officials and relevant experts, Maynard 200 Fellowship graduates are encouraged to lead newsrooms that are committed to equity, justice and fairness, especially as they navigate the upcoming upheavals and shifts in the industry. This impactful fellowship experience includes two weeks of in-person training rounds, additional sessions, office hours, and program support throughout the year.
Program Details
In 2024, the Maynard 200 Fellowship selected a cohort of five participants. Curriculum highlights include:
Training Week 1: Leadership Editing: March 11-15, 2024
- Building editorial and effective editorial relationships
- Coaching for story triage and editing
- Win the core of the story through 5 focus wrecks
- Practical editing and practice-oriented writing workshops
- The evaluator and coach of successful story pitches
- Setting up and managing the major coverage project
- Developing and managing the latest news reporting

Training week 2: Management leadership: July 15 – 19, 2024
- Coaching workshops: success in management and effective leadership
- Difficult conversations to manage the conflict

- The negotiation strategy
- Fault Lines® in management
The program will also provide nuanced frameworks and cultural competency for fellows seeking to resolve post-war and humanitarian crises in the Middle East; as well as the political coverage of the subsequent 2024 US presidential election.
The diet
Maynard 200 remains tuition-free thanks to the continued support of their generous funders, including the Craig Newmark Philanthropies, The Heartland Foundation, and McClatchy.
For the first week of training in March, the Maynard Institute will pay hotel costs for fellows. Fellows and/or their employers will be asked to cover the cost of their airfare and/or ground transportation to Fort Worth, Texas. Assistance with booking airline tickets is available upon request through the Maynard Institute’s contracted travel agent for March travel.
For the second week of training in July, both airfare and hotel accommodations for fellows will be covered by the Maynard Institute, through financial support from The Heartland Foundation. Fellows are required to book their July airline ticket through the Maynard Institute’s contracted travel agent.
For fellows located outside the United States, travel assignments are also limited. However, they will do everything they can to minimize costs for international fellows.
Applicants who have financial difficulties that prevent them from participating in your program can explain their reasons for seeking financial assistance as part of their application essay.
Eligibility
The Maynard Institute’s programs are open to everyone. They stood up to attack the underrepresentation of men of color and other historically disadvantaged groups in media-related professions.
Applicants living outside the United States must be affiliated with the media outlet or media organization in the US.

Applicants are asked to submit an updated resume, work samples, a reference letter, and a short essay. The essay question explores an applicant’s professional background, desired insight from the education, unique life experience and perspective.
