“If I had persuaded Liverpool to move, I would not have been happy” – Andre
Liverpool’s potential new signing Andre Trindade, who currently plays for Brazilian side Fluminense, has spoken about his failed summer move to Merseyside.
Over the summer, there were reports that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wanted to introduce a defensive midfield wing in an attempt to rebuild his team’s midfield following the departures of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.
There were many names on that list, including Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips, Stuttgart’s Wataru Endo and even Crystal Palace midfielder Cheik Doucoure. Only Japanese player Wataru Endo made the move to Merseyside, with Liverpool accelerating the move in time to meet the deadline.
However, an interesting name that was mentioned that very little was heard about until after the deadline day, was Andre Trindade of Fluminense.
Following the weeks after the summer transfer deadline day, Fluminense’s Sporting Director spoke on why the move to Liverpool never happened, hinting it had everything to do with team’s form and target heading into the end of the season.
He said;
“The chief executive of Liverpool contacted me directly. And I replied to him, ‘my friend, I don’t sell a player now and I don’t deliver now.
“If you want to buy now to take in January, we can start talking, or if you want to wait until December and we talk in December’.
“Saying this first hand, we didn’t receive a proposal for him, only surveys for Andre. We chose not to sell him because we believed that we would reach the final stages of the Libertadores. It was a decision made with sporting criteria.”
Hence, it was confirmed that Andre didn’t make the move because the team’s manager wanted him at the club.
And now, the Brazilian has opened up in a new interview, confirming what happened behind the scenes;
“I think every player one day dreams of playing for a big club in Europe, in a big league.
“But I decided to keep my word because when the January window closed, Diniz [Fluminense manager] arrived and told me that he wanted me here until the end of the year.
“We didn’t know that a proposal of that amount would arrive and I told him that, regardless of what happened, I would be there until the end of the season.
“It ended up passing and arriving in the middle of the year, we were still in the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores. It was a very difficult decision to make. I think if I had accepted this proposal,
“I don’t know if I would have felt 100% comfortable because I had already agreed with Diniz.
“He really values his word, his honesty and he always speaks to I know that when we do the right things, good things always happen. And in January he told me that without a doubt, if I stayed I would gamble and my value would increase.
However, Andre Trindade does not rule out a potential January exit, stating;
“At the end of the year, I don’t know what will happen, many things could happen. I’m sure that just having arrived here, knowing that it worked, was something that helped me a lot as a person and also helped me in my career.
“I think that as Diniz said, when we make the right choice, when we are faithful and when we act honestly, good things always happen ahead.”
