Omerelu Inferno: Ikwerre Council Chairman Describes Incident As Avoidable, Assures Perpetrators Will Not Go Unpunished

The Executive Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, Hon Engr Samuel Nwanosike (JP), has described the inferno occasioned by a truck laden with petrol that engulfed some part of Omerelu Community today as avoidable.

The Chairman, who was on the spot assessment shortly after the incident, blamed the fire incident on the police check point mounted on the place of occurrence.

He said, “This is an unfortunate incident that never would have happened. It is an avoidable incident.

“This cannot be called a force majeure. It is not possible because I don’t see a reason why a check point in this narrow road will detain a truck and keep the truck on the narrow road. For whatever, for whatever reason. Look at the resultant effects. Lives are lost. Properties are destroyed”.

Hon Nwanosike articulated that he would immediately set up a commission of inquiry to unravel what actually, promising that perpetrators of the act would never go unpunished.

“Well as government, as I am leaving this place now I am going to the office to constitute a panel of inquiry to investigate the remote cause of this incident.

“And I am assuring the people of Omerelu and the entire Ikwerre Local Government people and the entire Rivers people and Nigerians that the perpetrators of this act will not go unpunished. Each one of them, whether you are a security agents, whether you are a civilian that is involved in this action that led to the loss of lives and loss of properties, Ikwerre Local Government will make sure that justice is served so that it would act as a deterrent for further occurrence. Enough of this rubbish!

“And this is an opportunity to warn every other person that is holding a check point in this route, from Omagwa to Igwuruta, we will not tolerate parking of trucks on our roads anymore. The lives of our people are important to us and sacred to us”, he stated.

Recall that a truck loaded with petrol ran into a trailer parked in one of the check points at Omerelu Station this morning and caught fire which led to loss of lives and properties.
