In order to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government, the Executive Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, Eze Engr. Dr. Samuel Osorochi Nwanosike, DSSRS, KSC, JP, on Monday constituted a seven-man palliative committee that will pilot the Council’s palliative measures.
While forming the committee at Ikwerre Council headquarters, Isiokpo, Dr. Nwanosike stated that, “This committee is saddled with a very serious responsibility of seeing that our people in the 13 Political Wards of Ikwerre Local Government will have a lot of cushioning effects so as to survive the policy that has been holding us hostage”.
He reiterated that he sworn an oath to protect the Constitution of Nigeria and to improve the welfare and security of the people.
Describing fuel subsidy as a monster, the Ikwerre LGA Chairman commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for having the courage of removing fuel subsidy.
He charged members of the committee to carry out the terms of reference outlined for them holistically.
According to him, “The terms of reference of your committee is as follows: One, you must make sure that a very viable transport system that will be managed by Ikwerre Local Government from Rumuokoro to Omerelu must be established within the next two months, 60 days. Two, you must see that our farmers, hunters and fishermen are given high level of supports for them to have seedlings and have equipment to improve in their farming system to reduce the scarcity of food production. Three, you must design a framework that Council will form so that small business owners from the 13 Political Wards of Ikwerre Local Government must be supported, irrespective of political party, religion, tribe or sex”.
He charged members of the committee to be proactive and unbiased while discharging their duties.
Dr. Nwanosike justified that the Palliative Committee was constituted based on the decision taken by the President, agreed by the Economic Council, State Governors and Local Government Chairmen.
The committee has Sir Kelvin Wagbara as Chairman and Barr Kpsoruchi Wobodo as Secretary
Other members of the committee are Mr Bright Abgovu, Chief Victor Wagor, Lady Ibifuro Asonye, Hon Christian Nlerem, and Hon. Charles Wobodo.
